Event 1: Fantastic Voyage Watch Party

Earlier this week, I went to the Fantastic Voyage Watch Party. Fantastic Voyage is about a submarine crew that is shrunk down to a tiny size to help try to fix an injured scientist's brain. The crew, onboard the submarine Proteus, is shrunk down into a microscopic size, but it only lasts one hour. Their goal is try to repair the injured brain before they return to normal size. The team goes inside of the scientist and face many obstacles.

One obstacle the team faces is an arteriovenous fistula. From the movie and some extra research, I learned that this is an abnormal connect between a vein and an artery. With the arteriovenous fistula, blood flows directly from an artery to a vein, without going through capillaries. This is typically abnormal and over time it can cause possible complications. This arteriovenous fistula caused the Proteus team to detour through the heart. They must induce cardiac arrest to not cause turbulence to the submarine. Next, they travel to the lungs to restore oxygen. The team then goes through the inner ear, and has to be careful not to make any noise. After many hiccups, they finally reach the clot, and begin to operate. They end up discovering it was Micheals who was the murderer and who was sabotaging their mission. The rest of the crew ends up saving the scientist, despite the obstacles, and makes it out in time.

This movie tied into our class discussion of the intersection between Medicine and Art this week. The obstacles the crew faced in the body allowed me to learn more about medical terminology and conditions. I thought the movie tied in cinematic and scientific elements to create an entertaining movie. It also combined futuristic fictional elements with realistic scientific elements. I thought this made it a great example of the intersection between art and medicine.

I would definitely recommend this event to other students. I was already interested in the medical field prior to this class, and I found this movie really interesting! I thought it was a good mix of suspense and drama tied in with the scientific aspects of trying to save a life. In our watch party, people mentioned it reminded them of the plot of the children's show, "The Magic School Bus". I thought this was really funny, but true. In the children's show, "The Magic School Bus", a teacher takes a group of students on various adventures. I remember watching one episode where they shrunk down and went inside the human body as well! I thought this was an interesting similarity to the "Fantastic Voyage", as they also shrink down to try to save the scientist. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was interesting and entertaining.
