Week 4: Medicine and Art

Before this week, I didn't think about the associate between Medicine and Art. I have always been interested in Medicine, but rarely thought about how it could intersect with Art. However, as I reviewed this week's material and Professor Vesna's lectures, I found that Medicine and Art actually did have lots of intersections.

I didn't know that historically that Art and Medicine had been connected. Professor Vesna's lecture discussed how historically, human dissection was important for artists to be able to represent and understand the human body correctly. The art produced by artists historically showed documentation of the body and an understanding of it. For example, in 1858, Henry Gray wrote "Gray's Anatomy", an anatomy book. The book shows the growth and change of anatomical structures and displays many images and diagrams depicting anatomy. Many editions of the book have been published and it is a staple in both the medical and artistic communities. I thought it was impressive that they knew so much about anatomy in 1858, and that the diagrams were so intricate. I also thought that the creation the X-ray discussed by Professor Vesna, was really interesting. Wilhelm Roentgen created the X-ray in 1895. It was an impressive work, and gave scientists and artists to see inside of the body.

I also thought the TED Talk by Diane Gromala was very interesting. She discussed her experiences with chronic pain and how it inspired her to develop solutions. She discussed that they knew virtual reality + biofeedback and mindfulness meditation worked to reduce chronic pain. She discusses how the combination of meditation and technology can help ease patients pain and promote self awareness and peace. I thought this was a really interesting example of how art, such as the art in virtual reality and meditation, can be used for medical purposes.

Medicine and art also have many intersections in the present day. For example, one of my favorite shows is Grey's Anatomy (not to be confused with the book Gray's Anatomy by Henry Gray). Grey's Anatomy has 17 seasons and has been a popular show since 2005. It's about doctors working together at a hospital and follows along as characters grow and develop. It is an example of the intersection of medicine and art in the modern day. It displays beautiful cinematography and dramatic writing combined with lots of medical knowledge and background. The latest season is even about COVID-19, which shows how relevant it really is.

When studying this subject, I also thought about art therapy. Art therapy is another example of how art and medicine/health intersect. Art therapy is a technique that creative expression and art can help promote healing and mental health. I think mental health is a very important part of medicine, as can be seen with the specialty of psychiatry. Art therapy has been seen to be effective in improving the mental health of patients which is very important for their wellbeing. I think it is great that art and medicine can intersect to help patients.
